A web application is a program that is accessed via a Web browser on a network such as the Internet or an internal/office intranet.

Web design is the design of web pages, websites and web applications using XHTML and CSS. Web design is in contrast with web development, which includes web server configuration, writing web applications, server security and updates.
Web development incorporates all areas of developing a Web site for the World Wide Web. This can include graphical Web design, actual programming of pages, database and Web server configuration.
However, among web professionals, Web development usually refers only to the non-design aspects of building Web sites, e.g. writing markup and coding, programming and server configuration.
Web development may be a collaborative effort between developers rather than a project designated to a department.
